Whoops. Had to take a little side-trip there!
Just got back from sunny (well, sunny with occasional thunder-showers) Mexico. Girls Gone Wild - 2013 Edition!
This trip was, pretty-much, a carbon-copy of last year's trip (in terms of where we went, what we saw, and what we drank - err - ate!), so I'll just link to last year's slide show post (which I never did figure out how to embed!!!)
Random Mexico Photos
Okay now, requisite disclaimer: This is post is gonna be mostly-rambly. Consider yourself warned!
This year's trip was quite a bit different, in that it was something of an Emergency-Emotional-Support trip.
See, ever since Hubs and I went to visit them, and we discovered that Hubs really doesn't like the Mexican Ex-Pat Zone (Lake Chapala and surrounds), we girls decided that GGW Weekend needs to be an Annual Thing. No Men Allowed is what I'm sayin'!
So the original plan for GGW Weekend (Maiden Voyage - 2012), was for the girls to ditch their spouses and spend a 4-5 day weekend catching up, perusing Artsy Fartsy zones, and yakking endlessly in Girl-Speak (mind-numbingly dull for the spousal units!). In fact, last year, D's husband had flown back to the states - just so we girls could have our "Hen-Fest."
So this year's trip has been "cooking" since March (when I purchased the airfare). In the meantime, D lost her husband most unexpectedly. That was a total shock and major blow to D: I mean, he was many years her senior - and plagued with (hereditary) cardio-vascular issues - but he was also the poster-child for good, clean, healthy living. Seriously, he was like Mr. Iron-Man Triathlete, right?! So, on his last day on earth, he awoke to watch the Tour de France. Did his usual 100 push-ups and 100 crunches and - no doubt - ate a light healthy breakfast of fruit and granola (or something), then went on a 2-1/2 hour bike ride (Basically - just another normal day for them, right?). Well, when he got home, D greeted him as he was walking his bike back into the house. Next thing she knew, he was slumped-over, lips turned blue and in an instant - he was gone. He died right in her arms.
I mean, it was as beautiful as something-like-that can be - but HOW TRAUMATIC!
In the weeks following his demise, D had been very busy handling legal affairs, estate settlements, planning "Send-off Parties" ("Celebrations of Life" whatever you wanna call 'em), in multiple countries/states (They were quite the "Movers and Shakers" - back in their busy-career days).
Through it all, she had many friends, neighbors - Gringos and Mexican nationals alike - offering her food, support, rides to wherever (and more-than-a-few scumbags of-the-male persuasion who actually "hit on her" at her late-husband's celebration - Urgh!) (She is incredibly gorgeous and, at age 50, she is comparatively young amongst the Ex-Pat population - therefore, quite a "catch" in her own right!).
Annnnnywaaaayyy... Tactless Scumbags aside, she really does have a good support network down there - is what I'm sayin'. But in the weeks after her husband's passing, she relied most heavily on daily phone-calls with her mother - back here in the states. Welllll... Just a few short weeks after her husband's death, her mother's health took a turn for the worse. Her mom passed just 6 weeks after her husband.
So the "tone" of my upcoming Mexican Fiesta had changed significantly. First, I wanted to confirm that it was still okay for me to impose upon her hospitality during this difficult time - to which she replied "Are you KIDDING ME?! You are my beacon of hope!" (or words to that effect!)
So long-story-short (Too late!!!), much of the weekend was spent reminiscing about all of the good (and bad) times... Many tears were shed... There may have been a Complete Nuclear Meltdown at one point... Then, a little bit of gentle "Butt-kicking" was in order (since my friend had found herself on a bit of a self-destructive path - understandable, given the circumstances). Toward the end, there was definitely more laughter than tears, and I'd like to think I played a small role in getting her pointed back in the right direction.
And I feel good - for having had the opportunity to help a very good friend through a very rough patch.
Secondary to all of that: I feel good because - prior to my trip - I had gotten a steroid injection. That, unfortunately, seems to be the only thing that kicks my skin condition to the curb. Not really a viable long-term solution, but I'll take it for stuff like international vacations - just to ensure that I am able to walk and function like a normal person.
I'm rather enjoying this whole "normal" thing - now that I'm home. I've actually been able to do crazy stuff like: "I think I'll check out the Saturday Farmer's Market" and just put on a pair of shoes (Yes, SHOES!), grab my car keys and go. Or "Gee, we're out of milk" and - again - slip on some shoes, hop in the car and go. Or, crazier still: "I think I'll go out and tidy up the garden" (Gawd, that sounds so refined, doesn't it?!). So I ripped out the last of the tomato plants and assorted summer veggies (left the pepper plants - they've still got some fruit that's almost ripe). Filled the green-bin, I did! And that is pretty damned cool if you ask me!!!
(Srsly - this really is a "treat" for me right now - to be able to walk without pain!)
Oh how I wish we (the doctors and me) could find a REAL solution to this completely f**ked-up condition!!!
Anyhoooo... Sorry for the rambling, but I really wanted to take a minute to kind-of "count my blessings" - as it were. Normally I absolutely HATE this time of year. Autumn with it's shortened days, and cooler nights *always* brings me down! But we are having an absolutely breathtakingly beautiful Indian Summer, this October (Jeez!! October already?!!). I am up and walking - and I intend to squeeze every last micron of Vitamin D out of whatever sunshine we have left, right?!
And with that, I will add one picture of a couple of Talavera Planters that I picked up in Tonala, this last trip!
Adios! And I hope to get back to posting bona fide "content" someday soon...!

Random Rambly Randomness...
When I got off the plane from Mexico, I discovered that something TERRIBLE had happened while I was gone: WINTER ARRIVED ("Ohhh Nnnnoooooo!!!"). It was cold and drizzly and it *smelled* like rain. Boooo!!!
I did learn one valuable lesson though. See, when you fly home from Mexico (mid 80's, every day - to upper 60's at night), and you find that "Home" is now upper-60's by day, and 40's at night. Well, take a little side-trip to someplace BALMY like f**king Idaho, right?!! Mid 40's by day, and I don't even wanna know what the nighttime temps were! And the wind..??? Good Gawd I had *almost* forgotten about the bitterly cold wind in Idaho.
I did a semester-and-a-half in Idaho - including being Out-The-Door of my apartment, and down at the barn at zero-dark-hundred - to shovel steaming piles of horse sh*t (part of my Horse-Training and Stable Management Curriculum) (Yes, seriously!). In the winter, the poop-elevator (which carted the manure up, and into a large trash-container), crapped-out (pun intended), and we'd have to load the horse bedding onto a trailer, behind a tractor, and spread the manure onto the cow pastures - in the dark, freezing, bitterly-cold, take-me-out-and-shoot me wind (Srsly - you could feel your nose hairs freeze-up!).
Anyway, I worked VERY HARD to forget that wind!!!
Anyway, I worked VERY HARD to forget that wind!!!
Oh, and Buffett ROCKED, BTW (Yay!!!)
So yeah, we also had a layover in Denver (35*!), and now Northern Cal doesn't seem so bad anymore!!!
Actually, I had one day between trips, so I shoved a couple of loads into the washer, then came out and puttered around in the veggie beds...
I harvested more 'maters (Yayyyy!!!)
Kellogg's Breakfasts in the back
Early girls and one lonely San Marzano Paste (the ONLY SM I got this year!)
Early girls and one lonely San Marzano Paste (the ONLY SM I got this year!)
And I decided to tackle the Former Finny Farm bed. I had already amended it, a week or so earlier, with organic blood-meal (to bump-up the nitrogen and give it a chance to get watered-in). Then I added some organic compost and a bag of steer manure from Home Depot.
P happened to mention that OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware) had transplants of cool season veggies, so I dropped some $$ there and picked-up 6-packs of Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage and Swiss Chard. They also had transplants of Radishes (with the radishes already nearly fully-formed) - now that's just plain silly! So I planted an assortment of kohl crops throughout the beds - although I still haven't ripped out the maters from the other two beds. I was being optimistic, but I'm beginning to realize that NOW it's time to remove 'em. I'll just have to be careful not to rip out the cool-season stuff at the same time!
Anyway, here is the Former Finny Farm:
Kohl crops and I also sowed a row each of carrots and radishes
Barely a week later, and some of my seedlings are starting to appear - Yay!
I also purchased a couple of mini-greenhouse frames that *should* fit over these beds, just fine. I just need to decide when (how) I'm gonna rig 'em up and/or if I'm gonna be hiring Rent-A-Son-Services...
Oh, and I sowed various lettuce and spinach seeds in my patio planters, so hopefully I'll be able to pick fresh salads thru winter (I say that EVERY year and I think it's only ever happened ONCE! - Ha!)
More backyard chores: Weather's still too warm for fruit-tree spraying (hell, they've still got most of their leaves), so I'll hold off on that. I *do* need to clean-out my greenhouse and tape new bubble-wrap to the inside of the walls and ceiling. Thennnnn... I need to drag the marginals into the greenhouse... I might also think about firing-up my hydroponic garden and try growing some lettuces - just for grins...
Annnnnddd... We've still got a boatload of patio furniture to put away - yet. :::sigh::: I did start moving the lounge chairs into a horizontal plastic storage bin. We need to take down the palapas (thatch umbrellas on the Tiki Bar and dining table :::BIG SIGH:::). Followed by COVERING the dining table and Tiki Bar (That's *more* than a :::sigh::: - that's more like a :::SOB!!!:::).
Then break-down and store the backyard stereo; move/cover the bar sink; and move the fridge over to the front-porch of the storage shed. Those are definitely "Rent-A-Son" Chores. Hmmm... Wonder if he needs money?!!
Yep. Plenty to do, and need to get to it before it starts raining. Damn........
So far, the weather does seem to be holding up - but I fear I am pushing my luck a little too far with all this Yard-Chore Procrastination Stuff!
* * * * *
In other news... (Warning: Not for the squeamish, nor Ultra-Conservative!) I haven't p*ssed and moaned about my psoriasis in awhile. It's definitely still "There" - but it is starting to become a bit more manageable. I'm not exactly sure what I attribute that to, but I will be performing some "Experiments" to see if I can pinpoint it.
I'm really kind of debating whether I should be blogging about this - I am "mostly anonymous" - but there ARE folks who know me, and my blog... But what the hell, right? I mean, it's not like it's ILLEGAL (well, not "Completely" anyway!).
So I did survive my trip, in spite of a significant amount of WALKING - between airports, TSA strip-searches, hiking to various gates through various airports, and vacationing in Mexico, and then going to the Jimmy Buffett Show (and I did NOT avail myself of handicapped parking at ANY time - thankyouverymuch!).
What it all boils down to is: The more walking I do, the more "tender" my feet become. And the thing about psoriasis is: It causes skin to re-generate FAR too quickly (which results in thickening, unbearable itching, and ultimately peeling which leaves raw, open sores behind). I am now on my fifth dermatologist (and I swear-to-Gawd, she must be, like, a MAJOR stock-holder in Big Pharma - given her propensity for prescribing ONLY the latest and greatest NAME BRANDS of ridiculously-overpriced medications).
I don't even want to list all of the medications I've tried. Most have been high-powered steroid-based topicals (Nasty, nasty stuff). Some have been so irritating that they BURNED and then caused me to break-out in hives ALL OVER. I had done well with Narrow-Band UVB light-treatments but then, inexplicably, that stopped working.
I've tried various and sundry "Systemic" medications. Soriatane (which I couldn't tolerate), and Methotrexate (Nasty-Nasty Sh*t - left me feeling like I was having a heart attack and "If I am - Can I please just die QUICKLY and get it over with already?!!") (I *wish* I was exaggerating!). There may have been one other systemic drug that I've forgotten but - basically - the systemics are the same drugs that they give to organ transplant patients to keep their immune systems from rejecting their new organs...
So the latest drug I am on (in addition to all the Steroid Creams that cost a freaking fortune!), is Humira. If you're in the U.S. you have, no doubt, seen advertisements for this drug. It's a full-on Immune Suppressant used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Plaque Psoriasis and probably a bunch of other stuff as well.
Key-words here: Immune Suppressant. Now yes, I understand that psoriasis is an auto-immune disorder. But I also understand that I have a bunch of other icky health issues, annnnnd we are heading into winter, and the LAST THING I need is to have my immune system supressed! To say nothing of the fact that Humira BURNS like the fires of hell when you inject it (It is BAD. Really-Really excruciatingly painful!).

To say nothing of the fact that Humira BURNS like the fires of hell when you inject it (It is BAD. Really-Really excruciatingly painful!).
And then there's the cost. Oh my, yes. Humira is still under patent and it costs....... Drum-roll please.... $2,700.00/mo for maintenance doses. Grant you: My co-pay is only appx $55.00 but - Seriously?!! - $2700/mo?!! No effing wonder our insurance rates are doubling!!!
Yeah. I really DON'T like Humira.
So, the other night, Hubs was watching some documentary on Netflix about Medical Marijuana and that got me to thinking... Or, more specifically, Googling. Turns out, there is some guy on one of the Medical Cannabis Boards (sorry, can't remember which one!) who combined concentrated THC with Coconut Oil and used it as a topical cream on his psoriasis lesions. And it actually worked! In just a matter of DAYS!!!
WTF!?! That just might be worth trying, right?! Hell, at this point, it can't hurt. Also, one of the pills they prescribed for me is an Anti-Anxiety/Anti-Itch medication that DOES help me to sleep - but it turns me into a freaking ZOMBIE the next day! I'd certainly like to wean myself off of those!
Sooooo... Long story short (Too Late!). I Googled further and found a Medical Doctor who - more or less - "specializes" in writing Cannabis recommendations (Yeah, no surprise there). So, $90.00 later, after expressing my dismay over the prescription of "Anxiety Meds" I have to take, and explaining how "My anxiety exacerbates my psoriasis" yada-yada, I am now a Card-Carrying Cannabis User.
Now, lest you think I am a complete Loser-Stoner, I should probably explain that - Yes, I did smoke recreationally back in high-school and even a little in college. And, if I am in a Party-Type environment and a joint is placed in my hand, yes - I probably will take a hit. But overall, we REALLY aren't big pot-heads (at all!). I think we bought an 1/8th about three years ago - AND WE STILL HAVE MOST OF IT!
Honestly, I am really not looking to "Get high." In fact, my primary interest in cannabis is as a topical preparation to moisturize my skin and STOP the itching. I was thinking I might try to incorporate a small quantity of hash oil into my next batch of hard-lotions (but hash oil is awfully damned thick and sticky - and stinky! - I've discovered). In the meantime, one of the dispensaries had a product called Kind Rub which is sort-of like a cross between Ben-Gay (in terms of smell) and Vick's Vap-O-Rub, in terms of consistency/color. Although it's kind of greenish and pasty (and greasy - all at the same time!). It's meant as a muscle or joint rub ("joint" as in elbows and knees!). I've been using the Kind Rub (Google it, if you're interested) on my hands/feet for the past several days and I have STOPPED all of the steroid creams and ointments - cold turkey! I have to say, since I started this new regimen, my hands have cleared-up DRAMATICALLY. My feet still itch and peel a bit, but even they seem to be improving as well.
And, as far as I can tell, the Topical preparations have NO hallucinogenic properties.
I daresay that I am VERY pleased with the results I have gotten, so far, with the Topical Cannabis Rub. I suspect if I mention it to my dermatologist, she is gonna claim that "it's the Humira kicking in" (and it may well be). So I think I may need to experiment with STOPPING the Humira for a month or two - to see if the psoriasis returns.
Interesting world we live in, now. Prop 215 has made it easier for patients to seek relief with cannabis - which is a good thing. And, hopefully, this will open-up opportunities for "Science" to dive in and identify/isolate different cannabinoids to address specific complaints (There appears to be some good research *starting* at least!).
Nevertheless, I'll be doing a bit more research on my own, and probably experimenting with different home-made topical preparations to see what brings me the most relief. Although - with the Medical Cannabis Boards, it's kind of difficult to separate "useful info" from some of the "Duuuuude... I got sooo f***kin WRECKED on that sh*t!" posts, unfortunately (and yes - I suspect that not ALL visitors to the dispensaries are there for "Strictly Medicinal" reasons! I just hope the "Duuuuuudes" don't spoil it for those of us who have a real medicinal need, right?!)
I do believe that there is definitely room for some "Legitimacy" in this new industry. I really hope that it pans out! And if I find things that DO seem to help (Honestly, anything's gotta be better than the Pharmaceuticals I've been taking), I'll post my findings. Maybe, just maybe, someone else will find it helpful.
Oh, and to answer one final burning question: What with this post being about Gardening and Medical Cannabis..? No, I will NOT be growing my own!

Random Mexico Photos...
I have NO idea if this is gonna work, but I just uploaded my Mexico pictures to Shutterfly, and I am attempting to link to the slide show...
Try this!
Maybe I'll even get smart and figure out how to actually embed it into the blog. Or maybe not!
Oh, I hope this works!

I survived!!! (Back from Mexico)
Five Days without INTERNET! :::GASP:::
Last Thursday, I hopped on a Volaris jet and flew down to Guadalajara Mexico. Mi amiga mas preciosa, D, met me at the airport and we made our way down to Jocotepec (appx an hour from GDL), to their most GORGEOUS hillside casa overlooking Lago de Chapala...
Million Dollar View!
Now, I had planned ahead and purchased an international data plan for my Droid (100 megs for $25.00), as well as packed my Netbook. Last time we were there, one of her neighbors had unsecured WiFi that was accessible from the side-yard. This time? No WiFi!!! Okay, no worries, I'll just use my phone for email and occasional FB updates (no photo uploading, however - gotta limit my data usage). Well, as soon as I arrived at D's, my Droid's battery was almost dead, but I was pleased to see that I still had 3G coverage (Yay! Internet!!!), so I shot an email off to hubs to let him know I'd made it okay. Then I shut down the phone and hooked-up the charger.
The very next morning, I fired up the Droid and EEEEEKKKK!!! No 3G! No internet!!! WhatEVER shall I do?!!
Now I should note that D and her husband are VERY low-tech... bordering on ANTI-tech, to be honest! And they both kind of laughed at hubs and me, last trip, because of our apparent "Internet Addiction!" (We spent an inordinate amount of time - with our "Dueling Netbooks" - in the Side-Yard/Smoker's Lounge/Internet Cafe!).
Well, this trip, I (more-or-less) proved that "I can quit anytime!" because, well, I *had* to! Of course, I was checking my phone about every half-hour *looking* for a 3G signal. There was none! Not in Jocotepec, nor Ajijic! I can personally confirm that! (Eeeek!).
Actually, it was All Good. D and I had a FANTASTIC time just hangin' out; staying up late, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, and yakking endlessly about nothing! We got up whenever we decided to wake up, and we left the house by the crack of 11:00am, every day!
Now generally, D, dons her "Julie the Cruise Director" hat and plans out every-last-minute to ensure non-stop entertainment. This trip was decidedly more low-key (Thank Goodness! I do *not* expect to be "entertained!"). But there were a couple-three "Must-See" Attractions on my list.
First up was Viva Mexico Restaurant in San Juan Cosala. They make THE VERY BEST Chiles En Nogada, and I was totally jonesin' for that dish. We went there on our second night and discovered - much to my dismay - that the restaurant was closed. Evidently, there had been some Narco Trouble in their neighborhood, earlier this year, and they've shortened their operating hours. We arrived at 8:15pm, but they had closed at 8:00. Augustin, the owner, was most apologetic - but we went back the next night.
Started off with a Margarita:
I think this glass held about a quart!
(I kept giving myself Brain-Freezes - it was sooo good!)
Then, my All-Time-Favorite Dish:
OMG - The dish was just as good as I remembered and I damn near had a Meg Ryan Moment, right there in the middle of the restaurant!
I thoroughly enjoyed dinner that night, and explained to D that I had located several recipes, online, but I hadn't attempted to make it yet (it looks like a BOATLOAD of work!). Although I wondered, aloud, if they might be willing to share their recipe. I mean, it'd be a shame to go to all of that work and NOT have it come out as good, right?!
So D asked our server, in Spanish, if they would share the recipe with us. The waitress replied "No" and explained that it was their own Secret Recipe. Well, damned if Augustin didn't come out to our table, a few minutes later, and pull-up a chair. I then "Ooohed and Ahhhed" about how wonderful the meal was, and explained (in my seriously-broken Spanish) that I had looked-up the recipe and it looks like "Mucho Trabajo!" He agreed that it was a lot of work to prepare, and then he proceeded to explain (in detail!) how he makes his Chiles en Nogada! (His English is very good, BTW, Thank Gawd!) I grabbed a scrap of paper from my purse and started scribbling notes furiously! In fact, he went so far as to excuse himself and run to the kitchen to bring out his Secret Ingredient (a specific brand/flavor of Mexican yogurt - that I probably *won't* be able to find in the states!), and he hands me a spoonful of the yogurt explaining "I want you to remember the taste - THIS is what makes the sauce so good!"
How FREAKING cool is THAT?!!
Needless to say, Viva Mexico will ALWAYS be a "Must-See" attraction whenever I go back!
As far as the recipe goes: I'll save that for another post - whenever I work-up the nerve to try to make it. It really is Mucho Trabajo - a whooooole lot of work!!!
Another "Must-See Attraction" was the Cholesterol Delight (No, I still don't know the name of the place). This is where they cook the meat (Pork, Beef, Goat) on rebar stakes jammed into flaming/glowing wood embers. Unfortunately, the last couple of times D and her husband ate there, they both got sick. They think it was from the salsa (since the meat, clearly, is fully cooked), but she was a little scared to risk it again. Bummer!
We did grab dinner To-Go from a questionable-looking roadside stand: El Rey del Pollo (The King of Chicken). D trusts this place because the "cold stuff" is kept on ice and the folks who handle food do NOT handle the dinero (and vice versa).
El Rey Del Pollo
We ordered a whole grilled chicken and some fresh-grilled chorizo. That was, quite possibly, one of the best grilled chickens I ever ate! We did take it home and snarfed it down with homemade tortillas, queso and salsa. And - I just couldn't resist - I had to SIN and drink a Mexican Coca Cola, from a glass bottle and MADE WITH REAL SUGAR. Waaaaaaay the hell better than that High Fructose Crap we get here in the states!
We also ate, one night, on the plaza at a little sidewalk taco stand. Evidently, we were the talk of the town because Gringos don't generally eat there. :::shrug::: I'll admit, it wasn't a Five-Star dining experience, but it was still damn good food!
Anyhoooo... This isn't all about eating, believe it or not! The purpose of my trip was to get all Artsy Fartsy, right?!! Truth be told, we spent most of our time at D's house, just yakking and drinking and playing old 70's and 80's rock (on LP vinyl no less!!!).
We did go into Jocotepec, one afternoon. I love Joco and the old "50's-Style" of shopping (You want fresh produce, go to the Fruteria. You want meat, go to the Carniceria.) And you have to have extended conversations with each of the shopkeepers! "How is Tia Lupita? I hope she is getting better." yada-yada. I wanted to pick-up a poquito puerco molcajete for P, so we bought it in Joco.

We did breeze through Ajijic - but the Gallery Scene just *isn't* my scene.
No, the highlight of my Girls-Gone-Wild Weekend was our trip to Tonala (where they DO have 3G coverage!). I'll share pictures of that portion of our trip in a separate post. I will say that Tonala is f**king AWESOME! Loved it COMPLETELY and, honestly, can't wait to go back again!
Now, when I left, I packed fairly lightly. I've got a large, expandable suitcase. But I also had enough room to pack a large (empty) duffel bag inside of my suitcase. We were very cognizant of baggage weigh limitations so, when we went to Tonala, we actually BROUGHT my large suitcase - along with a scale! The ladies in the metal shop thought we were nuts until D explained that I was traveling back to the states - and then they agreed that we were very wise for being so prepared! HA!
Anyway... Our first stop in Tonala was Forja Española (Note: Website is written in Spanish and, honestly, the pictures don't even BEGIN to capture it!). An AMAZING shop with metal sculptures, furniture, lighting fixtures, etc. etc. etc. Now THIS is where they actually manufacture the Mexican Metal Art Stuff you find at expensive galleries. They have a very nice, tasteful showroom. Hell, I was blown-away before we even set foot in the place because they have these MASSIVE metal sculptures out front (including a life-sized horse made entirely of metal washers!). Unfortunately, photography is not allowed inside the shop - but I think I snapped a few pictures of the sculptures out front (I still need to go through them - hence, the need for a separate post).
Anyway, we browsed briefly in the showroom (and availed ourselves of el baño!). Then we headed for the back-room where the cool stuff was absolutely overflowing! It was complete Sensory Overload! Sculptures of all shapes and sizes of Anything and Everything! Iguanas, fish, turtles, chickens, dogs, horses (Oh Gawd did they have horses! A HUGE LAMP made out of wagon-wheel and metal horses!). It was positively dizzying - the assortment of metal sculptures. And furniture?! Oh My Gawd!!! Srsly - if I lived in Mexico - I could outfit my entire house JUST from that store alone!
Anyhoooo! One thing that I really-and-truly wanted was a set of Metal Mariachis. D has a life-sized Mariachi welded to her Terrazza - and I think he is too cool! And every time P and I go to the SF Garden Show, I drool over the smaller (~30" tall) Mariachis that are for sale, every year, at one of the vendor booths. But they are, like, $120-150 apiece (and I want a trio! More $$ than I am willing to spend).
Welllll... I am happy to report that I DID find my Trio of Mariachis. Annnnnnd they are UNIQUE! And I love them!
Tres Al Rojo Vivo ~ Muy Picante ~ Chile Pimiento Mariachis
What's funny is: D originally thought they were potatoes (which made no sense). I decided they were frijoles (beans - which makes a little more sense!). But then the gal who took our money told us that they were actually chile peppers - which made the most sense of all (Duh!).
Soooo... I think that's enough of an update for one night! I'll try to go through my Mexico Pictures and hope to share more of My Messkin Adventure in the days to come...
Hell, then there's still the Boise Buffett Show to yak about (I have been on 6 planes in the past week! Enough already!!!). In other words, I am BEAT, so I'm off to watch the Giants Game and hopefully go to bed EARLY tonight!
Adios!!!

Buffett in Boise (Happy Times!)
Okay, I'm taking a break from my recent "whining" episodes. Gonna talk about something HAPPY for a change!
"Really?!"
"Yes, REALLY!"
And here you were feeling all superior because your life didn't suck as much as mine, huh?! J/K!
So, I think I've mentioned - at time or two - that I am a BIG Jimmy Buffett Phan. Yeah, the jpg from a Tailgate Party wasn't a clue, right?!
I've managed to see at least ONE show from every tour starting back in 2001 ("A Beach Odyssey"). I've actually kept a list of all the shows I've seen - but it's pasted on the wall of my cube which is - pretty much - a "shrine" to my Buffett-Craziness! Tee-shirts and Concert Tickets and Stuffed Parrots (including a VERY LOUD, VERY VOCAL Pirate-Parrot, made in China with misspelled "Press Boton" button!), I used to have an inflatable Hemisphere Dancer plane dangling from the ceiling - but I bought that home to the Tiki Shack!...
Annnnywayyyyy, Jimmy SKIPPED California on his 2011 "Welcome to Fin Land" tour (GASP!), but we did get to see that tour in Arizona (Ashley Home Stores Pavilion is a freaking awesome venue, BTW. Rush-hour traffic notwithstanding!). And then, he continued that Tour into early 2012 and I got to see TWO California Shows! And - Thanks to the Latitude 38 Parrothead Club, I got to hang out with the COOL Phreaks and even got my SECOND appearance on The Big Screen by way of the "Parking Lot Video." Okay, that's my car - but they panned up to my face, k?!
So I got to see the "WTF" Tour three times - Yay!
Well, he has since started his "Lounging at the Lagoon" Tour. Haven't seen that one yet - and no more California Shows scheduled. He's doing two Vegas shows in October - one week apart - and he usually "sandwiches" a California Show (or two) between them. Not so, this year. He is playing Seattle and Boise instead.
Now, given my druthers, I would've preferred to go see him in Seattle. Maybe hook-up with "Who" - my work buddy who actually turned-me-onto Buffett in the first place. But - I'll be flying home from Mexico that day. I'm flying-in early enough that I could "conceivably" still hop on another plane and head-up further north. But seriously - who wants to do that?!
Hmmmm.... Does my love of Buffett surpass my HATRED of the state of Idaho?!! (I know it's probably not fair to "hate" a state. But I have my reasons... And that's a long, boring story [actually several stories] that I won't share right now!). Wellll... Hubs has TONS of SW Frequent Flier Miles to burn, so what-the-hell, right?! Let's take a couple days off of work and fly up for the Boise Buffett Show!
Tix went on-sale at 10:00am Mountain Time, today. Buttttt... I am a Member of the Parrothead Club! Wonder if any "perks" go along with that?!!
WooHOOOO!!! Turns out that - YES! - There *are* perks for being a card-carrying member of a Parrothead Club! I posted an inquiry to the Lat38 PHC board... Mentioned that we were thinkin' of heading to the Boise show and "is there any chance I might be able to score PHC tix, rather than 'fight with the masses' to order tickets online?!"
Couple of phone calls, and several emails later, I have scored us preferred seating for the Boise Show! BEFORE they went on sale to the general public! Definite "SCORE!"
No clue exactly "where" the seats willl be - probably not front-row - but they'll surely be Very Good Seats! And we'll be seated with the Treasure Valley Parrotheads (Like-minded Loonies!). Seems like there might be "official" PHC Tailgate Parties, too. But since we are flying-in the day of the show, I doubt we'll be able to join-in the madness. Plus, I'm not sure if anyone sells "flannel-lined Aloha shirts!" Might be useful, since I'm expecting we'll freeze our @$$es off, up there in October!
Hell, just getting to see Buffett again in October (thereby EXTENDING "My Summer") - that's good enough for me!
Sooooo.... Here's HOPING that my upcoming trip to the Dreaded State of Idaho will "break" my run of (EXTREMELY) bad-luck with that state!
Naw - I am seriously HAPPY that we scored tix and I am TOTALLY looking forward to this.
Come to think of it - I've got LOTS to look forward to (despite the "end-of-summer-blahs").
So, yeah, I guess it really doesn't "Suck to be me," after all! Busy-Busy few weeks ahead of me (and GAWD do I hope this Hellish-Humira actually WORKS so I can do it all!!!)

Finny, by the way, is in the process of starting her own business! If you are in the Silicon Valley area and want to learn how to grow your own food, Check her out! - Then a week later, we are flying down to SoCal to hook-up with some of Hubbie's relatives...
- Then a week-or-so after that, College-Bud-D and I are ditching our spouses and I'm flying to Mexico for a Girl's-Only Long Weekend of looking at Artsy Fartsy Sh*t and talking about "Hormones!" (Par-TAY!!!).

Random Ramblings: Updates (here) and Recipe (to follow!)
Oops. I've been kinda silent for awhile, haven't I?
Part of it is: I have a Medical Excuse (that I'd rather not get into - but let's just say it's tough to type when you've got to wear gloves!)
The better part is: Things HAVE been kinda hectic lately - including seeing two (Yes, TWO!!!) Jimmy Buffett Shows. He played San Jose week-before-last, but hubs couldn't go 'cuz he was stuck in So-Cal on a Business Trip. But then hubs decided to extend his business trip so he could drive down to San Diego. I then flew down on Saturday morning and we got to see Jimmy last Saturday night!
For the San Jose Show, I managed to make my SECOND appearance on "The Parking Lot Video" (my smiling mug blasted up on the big-screen). So that was SUPER cool! And I made a few new phriends from the Latitude 38 Parrothead Club.
My license plate on the Big Screen :-)
The Plate + Frame says "It's 5❤CLOCK Somewhere"
They then panned up to me, looking at my watch,
giving the Thumb's-Up and drinking my margarita.
Unfortunately, there was too much shutter-lag on my
camera to capture the pic of my face on the big-screen.
But I was up there! Really!!!
By the time I got to San Diego, my medical condition was *really* starting to flare up (Okay-okay, I've got psoriasis - if anyone cares!), so walking, dancing - even standing - was pretty painful. And by the time we got home, I was pretty-well whooped!
Still, it was loads of fun and I'm not gonna let ANYTHING stop me from having a good time at a Jimmy Buffett Show! (Even if it means suffering for over a week afterward, trying to recover!) (Gawd it SUCKS getting old!!!).
Since we've been back, I did go to see the dermatologist. She gave me a shot of prednisone so now I'm "Bloated, irritable and hungry all the time" (Great - JUST what I need!), the itching is *starting* to subside, but I still feel and look pretty reptilian. Niiiiiiiice! And much of the "pain" is still there, unfortunately.
...As is a bit of a "funky," bummer, depressed mood ("Sucks getting old" and "Sucks not being able to DO anything" "Waaahhh-Waaahhh-Waaahhh!")
In the meantime, I still have a boatload of yard chores to complete (Not hap'nin'!). We actually ARE getting *some* rain (which is actually a good partial excuse for not completing yard chores).
Friend-P has been cranking out tons of new Ceramic projects and posting pictures of them on Facebook, and texting and emailing me with pictures and excellent ideas of New Projects to start. And loaning me DVD's of different ceramic-techniques, yada-yada.
She's actually *trying* to cheer me up - which I greatly appreciate. But the fact is, it's having the exact OPPOSITE effect because - as long as my hands are all reptilian and painful - I *can't* go out and Play in the Clay :::sigh:::
Psoriasis is "triggered" by stress - but I can't partake in my "stress-reducing" hobbies because I've got friggin' psoriasis!!! (How's THAT for a f**king miserable Catch-22???)
Sooooo... I'm doing my best to take it easy. I spend much of my time with my feet propped-up (and slathered in Rx goop), and my hands equally slathered-and-gloved. I hope to regain *some* semblance of health by the end of next week. P and I are going to a "Make a Clay Birdhouse" class at a local (different) ceramic studio, next week. And next Saturday is the Annual Santa Clara Master Gardener's Spring Garden Market (how's THAT for a mouthful?!).
I definitely need to be in "fighting form" for that (Literally and figuratively!). I have started a few varieties of tomatoes (and other stuff) on my bathroom windowsill, and my germination rate looks pretty good, so far (Especially considering that the seeds are 3-4+ years old). But I've never had much success with starting things from seed and expect that most will perish upon transplant. I don't want to "hedge my bets" and I do plan to buy WAAAAY too many plants at the Spring Market!

Baby Sproutlings. I think I've had about a 70% germination rate, so far...
So yeah, I plan to kick back as much as possible for the next week (even though I am practically climbing the walls with Cabin Fever already!) so, hopefully, I'll recover enough to be able to get out there and accomplish something worthwhile next weekend!
And maybe, just maybe, I can get back to my Therapeutic, Stress-Releasing Clay-Play sometime SOON!!!

Kiln loaded with greenware, to be bisqued

Bisque-ware, unloaded from the kiln and ready for glaze.
Now, if I can just get to where I feel GOOD enough to get out there and slap some glaze on it!

(Belated) Road Triiiiiiip!!!!
Ya know, sometimes it kinda "loses something" if you're not timely about posting.
But - seein' as how I feel like I'm the ONLY reader (other than hubs), I s'pose it doesn't much matter, right?!!
(Actually, I do get about a hundred "hits" per week, so evidently somebody stumbles onto this blog - however inadvertently!!!)
Anyway... As promised, I will post the Big-Road-Trip-Recap and some Random Pics from said Road-Trip.
Warning: This is full-on "Rambling" so if that's not your thing, then just "Move along... Nothing to see here!"
Pre-Ramble-Ramblings: Many years ago, I purchased my Very First (and - come to think of it! - ONLY) Brand New Car. I think it was late-1990 and I had purchased a 1991 Geo Metro Convertible which looked like a Miata with a Thyroid Problem. BFF-S and I made a road-trip to So-Cal (to Magic Mountain, Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland) - without the benefit of a car stereo!!! - and we had "documented" our Adventure in a steno-pad notebook. Now, I'm pretty sure I still have that notebook buried someplace, but it was a hoot-and-a-half (in a "You had to be there" kinda way!!!). I definitely recall S's consternation when we started out our journey with a stop at 7-11 and my insistence on buying a Super-Big-Gulp Coke. And she was very diligent about logging ALL of our Rest-Stop Stops "Thanks to Nancy and her Super-Big-Gulp!"
It actually *was* a whole lot of fun and TONS of laughs.
Now add "Facebook" to the equation and our ability to update our friends' IN REAL TIME and, well, it's a guaranteed yuk-fest, right???
Welllllll... It would have been, had it not been for the fact that Facebook pushed-through some kind of upgrade and - FOR ONCE - it defaulted *everything* to totally private!!! Meaning: Every Gawddamned post and photo that I uploaded during that trip was visible to "ME ONLY." WTF???
BASTITCHES!!!
Anyhooooo... Here's the Random Ramblings I originally captured for Friend-P's and my Big Road Trip Adventure:
We survived our Road Trip to San Diego. Friend-P and I piled into the Sebring and headed out at - what turned out to be - 8:30am (rather than the 7:00am I had originally projected). Fortunately, southbound traffic out of San-Jo isn't too bad...
So we headed down 101 South to 152 East (we're in Northern California, we don't preface our highways with "THE"). We took a short side-trip to Santa Nella so we could stop for breakfast at Pea Soup Andersen's (ignore the Buellton address, it's the same website for Santa Nella, too).
*Love* that place - don't ask me why! And yes, we had Pea Soup for breakfast!!! (Yes, it's on the menu as the "Traveler's Breakfast" - Pea Soup + 2 eggs + bacon, ham, or sausage + pancakes).
Annnnnnd! I got two jars of their "Gourmet Seasoning" (which I actually LOVE - and had almost run-out-of!)
Then we hopped on I-5 South for the arduous and none-too-exciting journey through the Central Valley, down to El Lay and beyond...
Now, had the conference been a week or two later, the Valley would have been simply stunning with all of the fruit and nut tree blossoms. But alas, it wasn't. It was pretty barren and pretty dull. And pretty stinky around Coalinga and Kettleman City (Massive Dairy Farms and Feedlots) (Quick! Switch the A/C to "Recirculate!!!").
I'll skip the play-by-play but - suffice it to say - P and I managed to keep ourselves entertained. "Look! A Porta-Potty Ranch!!!" as we passed a large lot full of - you guessed it - Porta-Potties!
And we discussed such deep, philosophical issues as "Is that a Porta-Potty RANCH? Or is it a FARM?" Same with the Pallet-Farm, and the Farm-Implement Ranch (I think we finally agreed that Porta-Potties and Farm Implements were handled by RANCHERS, but we never did agree on Pallets.).
And P was updating Facebook the entire time... Checking us in at the various "Rest Areas" and uploading pictures of mileage signs and other inane sightings...
Unfortunately, she missed her Photo-Op for "Pleasant Valley State Prison" (Not to worry, I caught it on the return trip!)
Anyway... According to Google Maps, the drive from San Jose to San Diego was supposed to have taken appx 7-1/2 hours. But Google, apparently, knows nothing about Los Angeles Friday Afternoon RUSH-HOUR Traffic (which, apparently, starts around noon and, well, NEVER ENDS!!!).
Now I piss and moan, quite a bit, about Bay Area traffic.
Uhhhh... NO!
There are, quite frankly, too goddamn many people down there! To be fair, P and I did switch-off with the driving, and I did avail myself of Cruise-Control when we were on "The Five" (Okay, we're in So-Cal now... Gotta talk like a local!), but after sitting in ALL OF THAT TRAFFIC on "The Four-Oh-Five," (and Thank GAWD P came along - at least we got to use the HOV Lane!!!), well, my ankle was starting to ache and my Jovial Mood was starting to wane, rather quickly!
All I could think was "There are people who DO this Every. Friggin.' Day!!!"
And... "THANK GAWD I telecommute!!!"
And that's all I'm gonna say about that. (Jeezus!!!)
Anyway, I got us through the worst of it. Then P took over, because - seriously - my right ankle really was starting to cramp-up!
...And, ironically, it wasn't THAT long ago that I had done a San Jose to San Diego AND BACK (Like, yes, ROUND-TRIP) trek in ONE DAY! (I suspect some speed-laws may have been broken!)
But I digress.................
So then we're on a toll-road - "The 73" (if you care!) - trying to avoid the snarl on "The 405" - and ultimately getting dumped back onto "The 5."
As we're driving along, it's starting to get dark. Hell, it IS dark! And what do I spy, up ahead? Some GIANT BOOBIES (complete with flashing red-light nipples!) (a la Carol Doda and the Condor Club in SanFran!). I immediately perked up and shouted out "BOOBIES!!!!"
"What the hell is THAT?" We both wondered aloud.
"Hmmm... Where are we?"
"San Onofre"
"I think, but I'm not sure... They might be NUKES!"
So I power up my phone (neither of us had functional car-chargers, by the way - "D'oh!")
And I Google "San Onofre Nuclear" and, lo and behold, not ONLY are the Giant Boobies a Nuclear Power Plant, but HEY!!! They're LEAKING!!! Yippeeeee!!!!
Yes, the first "hit" on Google was a news article about how some maintenance worker FELL INTO one of the water/cooling tanks and now there was a "small, but not dangerous leak."
"Oh Goodie!"
We looked at each other and asked simultaneously "Am I glowing???"
Thankfully, we weren't.
And you thought this was gonna be an uneventful trip, right?!!
During the return trip, P and I were more diligent with our "Check-In's" on Facebook (at least P's posts were showing up!). We had breakfast at The Sugar Shack in San Onofre (home of the San Onofre - but *not* glowing - omelette). P "checked-us-in" there, but *I* checked us in at "San Onofre Nuclear Boobies!" (Sucked that the post wasn't visible to anyone but me - but STILL - I thought it was hysterical that that came-up as a "check-in spot" on FB)...
And further north, I *did* catch my Photo-Op for Pleasant Valley State Prison (and even managed another "invisible check-in" on Facebook)...
Anyhoooooooo... It was a Super-Fun Weekend. And I got TONS of inspiration for new Ceramics Projects - which I will be attempting very soon...
Here are some random pics "from the road:"

Split-Pea Andersen's Breakfast Menu

Proof that you CAN have pea-soup for breakfast!!!

General Goofiness. P is on the left, and I am on the right!

My Simply Priceless Souvenir from the Adventure

Oxymoron, encountered at Avenal Rest Area!
(Can't blame the Super Big Gulp this time!!!)

INSANELY expensive gas
I insisted we stop *before* we got to The Grapevine...

Dinner and cocktails at Miguel's in Old Town San Diego
I can honestly say that was *the* spiciest Chile Relleno I have *ever* eaten
(they didn't remove the chili pepper seeds - OUCH!!!)

General Goofiness in Old Town.
P-modeling a coonskin cap!

Sugar-Shack in San Onofre
SUPER cool restaurant - BTW. Very Old School.
I wish we still had "joints" like this around!!!

Breakfast Menu - Wonder if it makes you "glow???"

Can't argue with that!!!
Random shot taken on I-5.
Flowery-fields of some sort. I like the "impressionistic" quality of this pic, actually!

A "Full-Service" Gas Station (so to speak!)

Happy Cows from California
This was a dairy farm - where I think the cows actually ARE happy
(unlike the feedlots in Coalinga where they're all knee-deep in sh*t and preparing for death)

Shot of I-5.
I think this is when we were coming down The Grapevine...

"Pleasant Valley State Prison!"
(Yes, I "checked-us-in" there!)

San Onofre Nuclear Boobies!
(actually, this is just ONE of the boobies)

San Onofre Nuclear Boobies (better picture - stolen from the internet)
TELL me those don't look like boobies!
(especially considering the flashing red nipples after dark!!!)

While at the Potter's Conference, we did a Pottery Exchange.
This is what I won (and I felt like a TOTAL Winner! Me = Happy!)

This is where the Ceramic Flip-Flop ended up.
Abso-freaking-lutely perfect in our bathroom!!!
Okay... I think that's MORE than enough Rambling for one day - Don't you agree???
I'm gonna head out to my studio and start some NEW projects................................

Aventuras en México
Well, we're back! After a 9-Day Sojourn in Mexico.
We left on 11-11-2011 and came home on 20-11-2011 (How's *that* for some Funky Numerological Krep?).
As we were departing San Jose Airport, I was hurriedly attempting to download some English-Spanish Translators onto my Droid (only to discover that most required an Active Data Connection!). I did end up finding a couple of "Offline Translators" (which was a Very Good Thing since data cost something like $20+ per Megabyte!!!).
My Spanish is "passable" in the Resort Areas of Mexico ("Otro mas Margarita en las rocas, por favor, y un cerveza para mi esposo!"). Not-so-much en El Corazon de Mexico!
Anywaaaaaay.... We arrived, a bit disheveled and travel-weary, in Guadalajara at around 7pm, and had to do the whole Customs Thing. When you arrive in Mexico, they've got this push-button thing where, if you get a green light, you breeze right through. But if you get a red light, they have to paw through all of your sh*t. And we were *not* traveling light!!! (9-days + Scuba and Snorkel Gear!)
Well, Hubs decided to to the "hit the button" thing and, well, he has utterly craptastic luck and we got the RED light. Damn! So they had to search our bags :::sigh:::
Not that we were carrying anything questionable (although I was worried that my ceramic creations might've gotten broken in transit!). Between us, there were 4 suitcases and two smaller carry-ons!
Well, they looked through almost all of the bags and then I hefted my Big Bag onto the table - only to discover that the zipper on my bag had gotten completely destroyed in transit. The ONLY way to open it would have been to slice it open with a knife (And Gawd-Help-Us - we still had to drag it outside and load it into D's car). They wanted to search my bag and pushed it over to me to see if *I* could open it. No such luck!
I attempted, in my best broken Spanish (along with hand-gestures) to explain that we needed a knife or scissors to open my bag. "Lo siento! No abierto!" :::Big Frowny Sad Face:::
Well, the only "questionable" item they had encountered in the search, thus-far, had been 2 cartons of cigarettes in DH's luggage. They questioned me about that and I admitted that I had a 3rd carton in my luggage. "Dos para mi esposo - y uno mas para mi!"
They ended up just waving us through ("Thank Goodness!")
Anyway, we survived that ordeal, then wandered out to meet D. Thankfully, she had parked her car (since I didn't know what it looked like - other than the fact that it was a Toyota Matrix Weenie-Mobile - a HUGE step-down from the Porsche 911 she *used* to drive!). And I am soooooo glad we didn't have to slice my luggage open at the airport, 'cuz it was a bit of a trek to get to her car! (I'm envisioning my undies flying out of my suitcase as we attempted to haul it over the curbs leading to the parking garage!!!).
She had emailed me the night before our departure to confirm that she was picking us up. Thankfully, I did warn her that we weren't traveling light so she left her husband at home! (I honestly don't think we could have ALL fit into her car - with our luggage!).
Anyway... She picked us up and drove us to her home in Jocotepec - probably about an hour outside of Guadalajara.......
Oh. My. Gawd! What a BEAUTIFUL home they have!!!! They are on a mountain-side, overlooking Lake Chapala ("Million Dollar View" in the US - More like $350K in Mexico). I think she said her house was appx 3200 square feet. "Open Concept" with the kitchen open to the Great Room. The Great Room has vaulted, boveda ceilings (kinda like brick "arches"). 3 BR/2 BA. The Master Suite is separate from the other bedrooms (and overlooks the lake). Abso-freaking-lutely STUNNING!
All done up in Terra-Cotta Orange, Warm Yellows, Bright (almost neon) Greens, with Cobalt-Blue accents. I was sooooo thrilled to see that my gifts A) Survived the trip and B) Actually *matched* her house (although the spoon rest was more "orange" than Terra-Cotta).
I'll post pictures in a separate blog entry...
It truly is an amazing home. The house is set on a steep hillside, and they've built out the Terraza so that they've got an outdoor dining room and second, outdoor, living room with sofas and a firepit. And the most amazing Mariachi Sculpture... And potted plants hanging everywhere... And wrought iron-work... And Terra-Cotta tiles on the roof... And gorgeous Mexican artwork throughout (including a simply amazing, larger-than-life Don Quixote sculpture attached to one of their stone walls)... And Black, punched-tin, 3D Star-light chandeliers (one big one in the entry hall and one multi-size/multi-star chandelier over the dining table). Abso-freaking-lutely AMAZING!!!
The amazing thing is: Their lot is actually pretty small, yet they have essentially 6 "yards."
- There's the "front yard" (which I am attempting to help with Landscape Design ideas).
- The main Terraza, which overlooks the lake (Did I say they had an Amazing View of the lake? Oh GAWD!!!).
- They also have an upper "side yard" (mostly gravel) which is where the dogs "do their business,"
- Then they have a lower yard with grass (Same purpose, I think!)
- Then there's a "Garden" side-yard, where D is maintaining a "Kitchen Garden." It's smallish and buts against the neighbor's house (very close - but you don't "feel" it - at all). The Garden-Yard also has a built-in gas BBQ grill and fish-pond( That's where we spent most of our time b/c their neighbor had unsecured WiFi - Plus we were able to smoke out there!
- And lastly, the Guest Room has it's own Private Terraza (Smoking okay - but no internet access!)
Freaking AMAZING!!!
I attempted to take a "panoramic video" of their terrazas (but it's a little jittery! No Motion-Stabilization on my cheesy El Cheapo Big Lots video cam!). I'll try to upload it to YouTube and post a link here (later!)
I'll post a bit more about our Adventures, later. I've gotten side-tracked with "Catching up on Reality (UGH!)" But I'll try to post more later...

First Firing!
Ya know, I haven't blathered much about my Ceramic Artistry Endeavors in awhile... Perhaps we should switch gears, yes???
I *did* blather, rather endlessly, about the Construction of the Studio (in fact, I recall that my "rants" were rather minimal - comparatively speaking!), but I haven't yammered much about what-all goes on INSIDE the studio, since it's been built.
Of course, that's probably because I haven't spent NEARLY enough time out there. But, now that - ahem - WINTER is upon us (and I freaking HATE winter), I intend to change all of that!
Because it's ALWAYS Summer in Nan's Tiki Shack, dammit!!
Anywaaaaay....
Earlier this year, my College Bud, D, came to visit. She's the one who retired early (at age 39!). She and her husband sold their house, bought a new one - for cash - in Laka Chapala (just outside of Guadalajara), Ex-Patted to Mexico, and have been living a Life of Leisure ever since, right? ("HATE HER!!!").
Well, while she was here, we discussed the whole idea of us flying down to stay with her for a few days and... If we did... What kinda "Hand-Crafted Artistic Krep" would you like, right? And what "colors" are your house/bathroom/kitchen/yada-yada?
Now mind you - she's very close to Ajijic - which is another HUGE Ex-Pat Community with all kinds of Artsy-Fartsy Folks (to say nothing of Mexican Pottery, in general, which *I* happen to think is really pretty nice). But she did tell me that her house is decorated, mostly, in Terra-Cottas, Yellows, Greens, and Cobalt Blues... She originally expressed an interest in a spoon-rest for her stove. Then later mentioned that she'd like a vase to stand on her fireplace...
Now, I'm not much for "commissioning" Artistic Works ("I can't take the PRESSURE!!!"), but I figured I'd give it my best shot!
And, we are getting ready to fly down to visit her, very soon....
So I made her a Spoon Rest:

I kinda liked how it ended up with almost a "Flame" vibe -
given her last trip out here when she got to Ride B*tch on Roger's Harley!
In the meantime, I also started some Holiday Ornaments...
Every year, I make Christmas Ornaments for all of my colleagues at work. Not everybody exchanges gifts (beyond the usual "White Elephant"/"Gift Exchange" at the annual Holiday Party), but *I* like to give everybody some kinda little hand-crafted, off-beat Ornaments - 'cuz that's how I roll!
Last year, it was Mini-Margaritas Chartreuse (Lime) or Red (Strawberry)...

This year, it'll be Fru-Fru "Hurricane" Cocktails!
Those skinny stems are gonna be problematic, though - so I made some "other styles" as well (in case I experience too much breakage!)
I also 'slabbed-out' some other trays/bowls for selling, or giving, or whatever...

These were all "molded" from bowls acquired from the Dollar Store!

Some of the "other" Holiday Ornaments I made (in case the Hurricane Cocktails break!)
Then I figured I'd get all Fancy Schmantzy. D sent me an email telling me about the empty space on her fireplace mantle, and how she'd like a vase to set there...
I *thought* we had some extra lengths of PVC pipe, stashed in the backyard, and I sort of got a "vision" of a teardrop shaped vase, molded around a PVC pipe.
But when I sought-out the PVC pipe (which I *thought* was stashed behind the shed!), I came up empty-handed :::gasp:::
But, that very afternoon, I found a Wiffle-Bat - on sale - at the Grocery Store. So I used *that* for a mold, instead.
I came up with this:

The "daisy" impressions came from a sink-mat I'd picked up @ Lowes
So, I got to work on the "Wiffle Bat Vase" and figured it'd end up okay... But, unfortunately, it kind of wanted to "split" along the seam where the edges of the slab met. Grrrr!
I tried, unsuccessfully, to repair it while it was still "leather hard," but the crack kept re-appearing.
I came *this close* to smashing the damned thing, in frustration - but then I decided to take a hack-saw to it (while it was bone-dry) and hacked about 2" off the top of it. In the process, it cracked in a rather artistic way:

"I meant for that to happen!!!"
I ended up coating it with Yellow LUG (Liquid Underglaze)...
Anyhoooo.... Over a period of several weeks (maybe a couple months), I ended up accumulating enough "stuff" to justify my first bisque firing...
Mind you, I'm still maintaining a "Membership" at a local studio, and my intent is to complete my bisque firings (which take appx12 hours), up there... But I'm "breaking in" my kiln, so I figured I'd complete my first bisque at home...

First Bisque Firing - Complete!

First bisque - unloaded...
I think I need to do some glazing!

Wiffle-bat vase. I brushed some blue LUG on top of the yellow, and sponged it off
(to give more "definition" to the daisy impressions)
Then I coated it with clear glaze - and gloss cobalt glaze on the inside... It still looks like it wants to crack, but I am being "guardedly optimistic!"

Glazing is Messy Work!
(I wish I had enough room for a sink in The Shack!)

Glazing my "Dollar Store" Leaf Bowl
Actually, this last weekend was a bit "harried" as I was trying to complete all of my glazing so I could load the kiln. We are getting ready to fly to Mexico - later this week - and I wanted my stuff DONE!

First Glaze Firing - Kiln is loaded!

First Glaze Firing - I'm feeling a bit "paranoid!"
"Better Safe than Sorry!!!"
So I ran my first Cone-5 Glaze Firing yesterday. I was alllll kinds of nervous. "Will I burn the place down? Will my stuff come out okay? Will the Wiffle-Bat-Vase topple over and destroy everything else in the process? What about 'overhangs' at the edges of the kiln shelves? Will my stuff warp? Will the glaze drip on my other pieces? Will I destroy my kiln shelves - or worse - my kiln???"
Yes. I *am* neurotic!!!
Well, the kiln ran for just over 9 hours (I had allowed for a 200* pre-heat with one-hour "hold" because I had brushed-on a fresh - and not totally dry - coat of kiln-wash). It finished up last night.
I checked it this morning, and it had cooled from 2175*F to 166*F. Not *quite* cool enough to open - yet...
I did the whole "Work Thing" - but the kiln was lingering in the back of my mind... "When can I open it? I wonder if everything survived? What if it SUCKS?!!" Yada-Yada
Again, yes, I *am* neurotic!
Around noonish, I wandered out again...
Temp had dropped to below 100*...
Time to open the kiln (Eeeeeeeeek!!!!!).........

Happily, everything SURVIVED!!!
Yes, I think I *even* did a Happy Dance!!!

First Glaze Firing, unloaded...

I am Really-Super-Happy with my "Dollar-Store" Leaf Bowl

The Spoon-Rest came out "Okay"
But I wish the yellow hadn't faded so much into the orange...

And the Wiffle Bat Vase came out mighty-fine!
So I am Super-Thrilled that my first glaze firing came out okay. And I'm very happy that I'll have appropriate "gifts" to bring when we go to visit my friend, D, in Mexico later this week.
And I am all-kinds-of-thrilled with my kiln and am eager to start making even MORE sh*t - now that I've experienced a good, solid dose of "Success!"
